Preliminary operation
Before discovering how to upgrade to the latest version of the Linux distro, we suggest you make a backup of the most important data so as to restore them in case of problems. We advise you to refer to the guide enclosed below as a reference.
How to update Fedora using Gnome software
If you use the main version of Fedora with Gnome, then the update process is really simple. All you have to do is access your computer and start the Gnome application. Without this, you find yourself in front of 3 separate cards including the one concerning updates. Press us on and then click on the Update button to check if there are new updates available.
If a new release has been detected, a message will appear stating that the new Fedora version is ready to be installed. So, to start the upgrade, click on Install and then on Restart and install. At this point, do not press any button and do not try to perform any other operation as the update process will take place automatically. Once the upgrade process is complete, you will have the latest version of Fedora Linux.
How to update Fedora via DNF
In addition to the Gnome version, Fedora is available in many other variants such as KDE, XFCE, Mate and so on. In this case, we suggest using the DNF tool through the terminal.
However, before starting the update process, any pending software updates must be installed. So, open the terminal and execute the commands sudo dnf refresh and sudo dnf upgrade -y in succession. If successful, let DNF install the update available for your Fedora PC.
Once this step has been completed, it is time to start the distribution update process. First of all, you need to install the DNF update plugin on the system using the command sudo dnf install dnf-plugin-system-upgrade -y. This add-on allows Fedora users to quickly download a new version of the operating system through the terminal.
In this tutorial the update from Fedora 28 to 29 is done as it is the latest version. However, you can still take advantage of the same guide in the future by simply replacing the number 29 with that of the new release. Therefore, inside the terminal type the command sudo dnf system-upgrade download –releasever = 29 . In this way, all the individual updates available for the system will be downloaded.
Please note that we are talking about quite large files, so you will have to be patient and let the command do its job. Once you have completed the download of all the essential packages and files that Fedora needs to perform the update, it is time to complete the process. As seen with the previous method, you need to bring Fedora into an update state to move to the new version. Just use the sudo dnf system-upgrade reboot command.
Once the Linux distribution has restarted, the Grub menu selection screen will appear. Do not press anything and let the distro update. Once the update is complete, the computer will restart automatically.
