We all know that it is good to update the hardware drivers, but sometimes the new versions give more problems than the previous ones. Here’s how to roll back to the previous version of a troublesome driver.
It can not be said that Windows 10 is not updated regularly. New versions of various operating system components are available almost weekly, with the aim of improving performance and adding new functionality. However, there are times when upgrades cause problems that did not exist before, which can have a negative impact on the user experience.
Other problems, which are somewhat common, may occur when you update the graphics card driver, sound card, network adapter, or any other hardware that you have connected to your computer. Often the new drivers can cause incompatibilities due to several factors, which may even make you unable to use your machine or some programs that you have installed.
Windows 10 includes a feature called ‘Roll Back Driver’, which resides in ‘Device Manager’ and allows you to easily troubleshoot malfunctioning drivers.
Let’s see how it works:
- Right-click the ‘Start’ button.
- In the menu that appears next choose the option ‘Device Manager’
- In the ‘Device Manager’ window choose the class of hardware that is malfunctioning and click on the device with the right mouse button. In our case we chose the graphics card.
- Click the ‘Properties’ option.
- Click the Driver tab.
- Click Roll Back Driver.
- Choose one of the reasons you’re about to roll back the Driver can be anyone.
- Click the ‘Yes’ button to confirm.
- Restart the computer.
From this last action, Windows will remove the hardware driver that has installed and install the previous version.
If the ‘Roll Back Driver’ button is not available then Windows does not have any previous version of the driver in question. If this is the case you will need to remove the driver by hand, download an older version from the hardware manufacturer’s website and install it.
The Roll Back Driver feature is available from Windows 7.
