How to request a refund for an app on Google Play

It does not matter how good the comments of an application or game are. There is always a chance you will buy, download and not be impressed. It may not work as you hoped or, worse yet, it will not work. The good news is that you can request a refund.

When you request a refund on Google Play, things can be a bit tricky. Google does not always provide refunds, but if you apply within 48 hours, you should have no problems.

To get started, open a browser (better on your desktop or notebook) and go to your Google Play account page. It’s exactly the same Google Play that you access on your smartphone, only with the enlarged screen, logically.

Scroll down until you see your order history and find the app you want to get refunded. To the right of the item, you’ll see three vertical points. Click these points, and then select the only option that appears, which is “Report a problem.”

Now you will see a new window appear. In the drop-down menu, you’ll see some possible reasons to request a refund. Select the one that is most relevant to your situation. The options are listed below:

  • I bought this by accident.
  • I do not want this purchase anymore
  • The purchase was made by a friend or relative without consent
  • I do not recognize this purchase or payment
  • I bought this but I did not receive it
  • Your purchase is defective or does not function as advertised

Depending on which option you choose, Google will display additional text suggestions. Neither of them prevents you from moving forward with the request, so enter a brief description of why you need a refund and click the “Submit” button.

Once a refund request has been submitted, you should receive an email with Google’s response. Usually, this feedback comes in around 15-20 minutes.
