How to know version of Windows (Home, Pro, Student, Enterprise etc.)

If you are using a computer that is not yours, you may need to know the operating system version (Home, Pro, Student, Enterprise, Server …) to install new programs and applications. On Windows, this information is simple to obtain. Just follow the steps below. The tip applies to Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 7.

How to know the version of Windows 10

  1. Open Windows Start Menu 10;
  2. Enter “About” and select “About your PC”;
  3. Look under “Windows Specifications” to find out which version and edition;
  4. In edition, there will be the type of Windows (Home, Student, Professional …);
  5. In version will be the number of the update of the operating system;
  6. In OS compilation will be the version of the operating system build;
  7. Under system type you will know if Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.

How to know the version of Windows 8 and 8.1

  1. Slide your finger from the right edge of the screen (charm bar);
  2. Touch “Settings” and “Change computer settings”;
    If you have a mouse, point to the lower right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, click “Settings” and “Change Settings”.
  3. Tap or click “Computer and Devices” and “PC Information.”
  4. Look under “Windows” for the version and edition of what your PC is running.
  5. Look under “Computer” for the system type: a 32-bit or 64-bit version.

The Windows 8 Home screen can also help you know what the operating system is. The computer looks similar in Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1. You may see a search button in the upper right corner.

How to Know the Windows 7 Version

  1. Click the Start Menu button;
  2. Enter “Computer” in the search box;
  3. Right-click “Computer” and click “Properties”;
  4. Look in “Edit” for the version and edition of what your PC is running.
