How to download and install new custom fonts for Microsoft Office in Windows 10

Need to use a special font in your next project? See how you can add new fonts to your operating system.

Although Microsoft Office includes a large set of fonts, sometimes it may be necessary to add new ones, especially for a particular job. However, none of the Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook include an option to install new fonts.

If you need to install a new font, you should download the files (.ttf and otf extensions) and install them in Windows 10 so that they are available for use in all your applications.

In this guide for Windows 10, we will show you how to install and remove new fonts for Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other Office applications.

How to install new fonts in Office through the Microsoft Store

  • Open the Start menu
  • Click the gear that appears on the left side.
  • In the window that appears click ‘Customization’.
  • Click Fonts.
  • Click the ‘Get more fonts in the Microsoft Store’ link near the top of the window.
  • Choose the font you want to install.
  • Click Get.

Once the process is finished, the new font will become available in all applications that are compatible with system fonts.

How to Manually Install New Fonts

When you purchase a new font, other than through the Microsoft store, or when you download a font from a repository, you must do a manual installation. Here’s how:

In Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder where you saved the font files.

If they are compressed you will have to decompress them first. Right-click and choose the ‘Extract All’ option.

In the next window press the ‘Extract’ button.

When the process is finished, you will have a new folder where the .TTF or .OTF files are located.

Right-click on the name of the font you want to install. In the menu choose the option ‘Install’. This process will have to be repeated for all fonts that you want to install on your system.

After the installation process is finished, the font will be available for all Office applications.

This process only installs the font for use with your user account, if you want it to be available to everyone, choose the ‘Install for all users’ option.

Install fonts through settings

When the May 2019 update for Windows 10 is available, there will be a new installation method for the fonts that use the System Settings:

  • Open the ‘Settings’ (gear in the ‘Start’ menu).
  • Click Customization
  • Click Fonts.
  • Drag the font file that you want to install to the Add Fonts box.

The installation will be automatic and when finished, this font will be available for all Windows programs.

How to remove a font in Windows 10

When you are no longer using a particular font you can remove it to save space:

  • Open the ‘Settings’.
  • Click Customization
  • Click Fonts.
  • Click on the font you want to remove.
  • On the next screen, under the Metadata heading, click ‘Uninstall’.
  • Click ‘Uninstall’ again to completely remove the files associated with that font.
