How Windows Defender works and how to disable it

Antivirus that comes installed in Windows 10 has several functions enabled, but they are not always useful at all. Understand how they work and learn to turn them off!

Since Windows became dominant in computers, one of the programs that were always present on the machines was the antivirus to leave it – supposedly – protected from threats. Over time, instead of having to download/buy a program of this category, Microsoft started to include Windows Defender in the system natively.

In turn, even though it is built into the system, some Windows Defender functions can be manually disabled if they do not suit you and steal the performance of your PC. However, keep in mind that you can lose protection features if you choose to disable certain features.

That said, here’s how to disable specific Windows Defender features.

What you lose when you disable Windows Defender features

As explained above, one of the main functions of Windows Defender is to be an antivirus, but its features go beyond that. Its main functions can be summarized in these items:

  • Real-time protection-Scans your computer at all times to protect you from viruses;
  • Protection provided in the cloud-Synchronize your data with Microsoft servers to improve your defense mechanism;
  • Automatic Sample Submission-Function automatically sends malicious files to Microsoft;
  • Protection against violations-Prevents files and other data from the machine from having its owner altered, so that you do not lose access to them due to viruses;
  • Controlled folder access-Protects system folders from changes.

All these items that have been mentioned by default are enabled in the system and therefore leave you protected even without your knowledge. Of course they can be disabled, however, this will make you more susceptible to viruses and other threats, which may come by this means.

How to Disable Windows Defender

To disable a Windows Defender mechanism the process is very simple and can be done without tricks in Windows 10. In addition, it is not necessary to disable all the functions of it, leaving only what interests you. Check out:

  1. Press the “Win + I” keys together to open the Windows 10 “Settings” screen and enter “Update and Security”;
  2. In the left menu, enter “Windows Security”;
  3. Now click “Open Windows Security”;
  4. Click “Virus and Threat Protection”;
  5. Under “Configuring Virus and Threat Protection”, click “Manage Settings”;
  6. Enable or disable any items that you think are necessary.

Ready! After performing these procedures, it is recommended that you restart your computer for the changes to take effect. Also, keep in mind that tampering with Windows Defender settings does not change the way other antivirus engines work.
