How to schedule downloads on windows PC

Downloads can slow down the performance of computers. With Xtreme Download Manager (XDM) you can intelligently manage the files to download, scheduling them for when you are not using the PC.

1- Installing XDM

Start by downloading XDM through the bit.ly/2F0UUxT page and install the program. When opening Xtreme Download Manager will see an area that allows the integration with the browser, with add-ons for the main existing browsers – Firefox, Opera, Chrome and Edge. If you use one of the first three, click on the respective button and the installation is automatic; if you use Edge, you will have to follow the instructions given in the ‘Instructions’ button. In this case, we will use Chrome. If you prefer not to integrate XDM with the browser you can skip this step by clicking the arrow next to`Browser monitoring ‘.

2- Scheduling the downloads

Click ‘Settings’ (gear) and then ‘Scheduler settings’> ‘View settings’ and check the ‘Start queue at’ and ‘Stop a queue at’ boxes. This will allow you to indicate the time you want the downloads to be made. In this case, we advise you to download them when you are not using the PC, for example at night.

Lastly, choose the ‘Daily’ option so that the times are applied every day. From that moment, XDM will download the links that we indicate in the time we defined, that is, between one and eight in the morning. Click the arrow to the left of the ‘Queue and scheduler’ to close the option.

3- Schedule downloads

As an example, we will use the Gimp link, a free image processing program. Go to gimp.org, click ‘Download’ at the top of the page and then right-click on the orange image ‘Download GIMP 2.10.8 directly’ (the version number may have changed but you do not have any implication for what we want to do).

Then select ‘Copy link address’ (in Chrome, in other browsers the terminology may vary slightly). Go to XDM and click ‘+’ on the bottom bar or the ‘File’> ‘Add URL’ menu and the program should automatically populate the information. However, if this does not happen, paste it in ‘Address’. After this task, instead of choosing ‘Download Now’, click `More … ‘>’ Download Later ‘>’ Default Queue ‘. The ‘Default queue’ is actually the time you chose earlier to download the files.

Then you can continue to add links so that when you sit down again after eight in the morning, the programs are all ready to be installed.

4- Reduce the weight of Windows updates

It is vital to keep Windows up to date to ensure that any vulnerabilities are not exploited by hackers. This is why, normally, the updates are completely free to be installed on the PC, which can cause complications especially in older machines or if they were too large. So if you want, you can delay some updates with the option ‘Connection with limited traffic’, as some updates will no longer be installed automatically.

To do this, click on ‘Start’> ‘Settings’ (gear)> ‘Network and Internet’ and the sidebar under ‘Wi-Fi’> ‘Manage known networks’. In your current network choose ‘Properties’ and enable ‘Set as connection with limited traffic’.

5. Reactivate Service Synchronization

Note that by enabling this feature, you are also pausing other services such as OneDrive updates. If you use this program frequently and want to have the service to do the synchronization of documents will have to reactivate it manually.

Click the OneDrive icon in the Windows taskbar and choose the pause button, which says ‘Your files are not being synchronized right now’ to re-enable synchronization. You can do the same type of procedure for other programs that see that they have stopped synchronizing automatically.
