How to run Chrome OS from a USB stick on your computer

With the right tools, you can test the operating system developed by Google on your computer

Chromium OS is Google’s system for its Chromebooks, which work like notebooks, but instead of using the traditional Windows, bring this system already pre-installed. In recent years, Google system has implemented several interesting new features, such as native support for Linux programs and Android applications.

Fortunately, even if you’re not willing to invest in a Chromebook, there are alternative ways to test the system, since it’s free. Here’s how to test Chrome OS on your computer from a USB stick.

As stated above, the Chromium OS system is free and is also open-source. The following tutorial uses the pure Chrome OS image, which receives updates on a daily basis but is not always compatible with all computer configurations.

How to run Chrome OS from a pen drive

The process for putting Chrome OS on a USB stick is similar to putting a Linux distribution, and the device must have at least 8 GB to avoid complications. Check how to proceed:

    1. Access this link and download the latest Chrome OS image;
    2. Once you have downloaded the file, extract your content to a folder of your choice;
    3. Now, access this site and download Etcher ;
    4. Open the Windows file explorer and right click on the thumb drive to use the “Format” option;
    5. Use the setting to finish formatting it;
    6. Open Etcher and click “Select image” to choose the file that was uncompressed in the second step of this step by step;
    7. Then click on “Select drive” and choose the pen drive where will be Chrome OS;
    8. Finally, click “Flash” and wait for the process to complete.

Once you have accomplished the step-by-step above, you will need to enter the BIOS of your computer and put the pen drive as the main boot drive. To do this, when you turn on the computer, you must press the F2 or Del key, which varies with the manufacturers and follow the instructions to enter Chrome OS and start using it.
