How to reset the Folder View in ‘File Explorer’ in Windows 10

If you have made changes to the folders view in Windows, see how you can have everything back as it was at the beginning.

Windows 10 ‘File Explorer’ has five different templates for customizing folder content viewing, which include ‘General Items’ (the default setting for all folders), ‘Documents’, ‘Images’, ‘Music’, and ‘Videos’. Each template has a different layout with icons as well as different ways of sorting and grouping files depending on the content type set for that folder.

For example, the ‘Images’ template has a layout with large icons, while the ‘Music’ template shows more detail and offers a sort order by track number, title, artist or other information.

Even if you are using a specific template in a specific folder, you can further customize the view through the View tab. If you have made too many changes in File Explorer you can always reset the view to the default mode for a folder, or for all those who are using the same template through the Folder Settings.

Let’s see how you can do all this:

Resetting the Display Settings of a Folder

  • Open-File Explorer.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Click the ‘Options’ button.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Click ‘Reset Folders’.
  • Click Yes, and then click OK.

From this moment the folders will return to the default view.

Change the display template for a folder

Use these steps to change the display model of a folder:

  • Open-File Explorer.
  • Go to the location of the folder you want to customize.
  • Right-click the folder icon and choose the ‘Properties’ option.
  • Click the ‘Customize’ tab.
  • Choose the option you want from the menu ‘Optimize the folder for:’.
  • Options include:
  • ‘General items’.
  • ‘Documents’
  • ‘Images’
  • ‘Music’
  • ‘Videos’

You can also turn on the ‘Apply this template to all subfolders’ option to apply it to all folders that are within the one you are customizing.

Click Apply, and then click OK.

After this last step, the viewing of the contents of this folder will be optimized for the type of content you have chosen.
