How to format a write-protected usb drive?

Do not despair if you are trying to format a flash drive that is write protected. Here’s how to remove write protection, check out our tutorial and remove this protection in a few steps.

If you have a pen drive you would very much like to use, but it is write-protected, so if you can not insert your files into it, do not despair. Your gadget is not useless. There is a way to make it useful again. Check out how to format a write-protected flash drive in Windows.

Discard other issues

First, we need to rule out other common problems in this case. Make sure that the problem is not an inoperative USB port. To do so, try inserting the USB stick into another port, or insert any other USB device, such as your smartphone’s charger (connected to your smartphone, of course!) Into the same port.

Does the USB port work with other things, and the pen drive is not recognized by other ports? Then this problem is ruled out. If your USB port does not recognize any devices, it may be disabled. If this is the problem, read this article and learn how to arrange an activate a USB port that is disabled.

How to remove write protection on the pen drive with Diskpart

1. Make sure the pen drive has a write-protect switch

If so, simply turn it off and continue with the formatting. Otherwise, continue to the next step.

2. Connect the USB stick to a USB port on the PC.

Press Win + R. This opens the Run dialog box.

3. Type disparate, and then click  OK.

This opens a terminal window displaying a command prompt.

  • If you see the “User Account Control” window, click Yes to continue.

4. Enter  list disk and press Enter

This lists the drives connected to the computer, including the internal drives.

5. Find the number of your USB drive

The drives are labeled Disk 0, Disk 1, Disk 2, etc. You can identify by size what your pen drive is.

6. Enter Select Disk [number] and press Enter

Replace [number] with the number next to your pen drive (for example, select Disk 1 ). You will see a message that says “Disc [number] is now the disc selected.

7. Enter  and press attributes disk clear read only Enter

This removes the write-protect attribute from the pen drive. When the process is complete, you will see a message stating that the attributes have been successfully cleaned.

8. Enter clean and press Enter

This erases the data on the drive.

9. Enter  create partition primary and press Enter

This creates a new partition so that you can format the drive. After returning to the “DISKPART>” prompt, you can close the window by clicking the  X  in the upper right corner.

10. Press +  to open Windows File Explorer WinE

This displays the files and drives on your PC.

11. Scroll left column, and right-click the pen drive

It should be near the bottom of the column. A context menu is displayed.

12. Click  Format …

A dialog box with various formatting options will be displayed.

13. Select an option from the “File System” drop-down menu

  • FAT: compatible only with 32GB or smaller drives. Compatible with Windows and Mac.
  • NTFS: Only compatible with Windows.
  • exFAT: Compatible with Windows and Mac.

14. Enter a name for the drive

This goes to the “Volume label” box.

15. Click  Start 

It’s at the bottom of the window. A pop-up warning will appear, remembering that the formatting erases the data from the disk.

16. Click  OK

This formats the drive, which can take several minutes. A popup appears when you’re done.

17. Click  OK 

The unit is now ready for use.
