How to free up storage space in Windows 10 automatically

The October 10 update of Windows 10 has finally been released for all users, which turns out to be funny since this is only happening in December. With the update, the system brought a number of functions, one of the most interesting being the ability to free up space on the HD automatically with OneDrive.

The feature arrives as an evolution of the  Files On-Demand feature, introduced last year. With it, you can right-click on a file stored on your PC and move it to OneDrive. The file loads, but leaves behind a placeholder in the File Manager, which you can click to download and open it. Now, this process can be automated.

Storage Sensor and OneDrive

The feature allows the user to save recent files, which are accessed more frequently, his PC and older files in the cloud. It is a Storage Sensor function enhancement, which originally automatically deleted temporary files and data that had been in the trash bin for more than 30 days.

To do this, go to  Settings> System> Storage and activate the storage sensor.

Then click on “Change how to automatically free space”, scroll down to the OneDrive section and, in the “Content will only become online if not opened more than once” option, choose a period: 1 day, 14 days, 30 days or 60 days.

Local versus cloud

When files are uploaded to OneDrive, bookmarks are left next to each file so they can be easily identified. You will see three different icons for OneDrive files in the Status column:

  • Blue cloud: file only online;
  • Green check mark in white circle: Locally stored file that can revert to online when there is little space;
  • White check mark in green circle: Locally stored file that will remain in place, no matter how small space is obtained.

No need to worry about decorating these items as they are for information only. The storage sensor feature does everything automatically, freeing the space on the disk.
