6 Ways to Customize the Windows 10 Lock Screen

The Windows 10 lock screen can be more than just a password entry screen. It can be configured to show application notifications, calendar appointments, plus the date and time. You can add your own photos to the background or let Windows view images randomly. And here are a handful of tips for customizing the Windows 10 lock screen.

Choose Background

You have three options for the background of the lock screen: Picture, Slide Show, or Windows Highlight. The Image option lets you choose one of your photos for the background; the slide show lets you choose a folder that will go through a collection of photos.

The Highlight Windows select high-resolution photos of the Bing home page (this option is my favorite for the quality and variety). To choose, click the Windows menu, choose Settings> Personalization> Lock screen. Now, just choose the desired option in the background.

Add some apps

Its lock screen can do more than just show off beautiful landscapes. You can add up to eight applications that will display quick notifications – one application to display detailed statuses and seven applications to show fast statuses.

To choose these applications, go to Settings> Personalization> Lock screen> Choose an application to show detailed status and /or Choose applications to show fast statuses. Click the boxes to choose an application and to add as well.

If you do not want to show apps, click each box and set the app to None. Applications that can display status include Weather, Skype, Calendar, Mail, Shop, Xbox, but they vary based on the applications installed on your device.

Put the Cortana on the lock screen

You can talk to Cortana (personal assistant of Windows 10) without unlocking your PC. Go to Settings> Cortana and change to Use Cortana even when my device is locked.

This will allow it to perform basic tasks such as searching for information or weather while the device is locked. If you are familiar with the possibility of Cortana accessing your personal information and doing things like scheduling appointments, check the Allow Cortana box to access my Power BI calendar, email, messages, and data when my device is locked.

Change your login screen background

There are two options for the login screen background: solid color or the photo displayed on the lock screen. To choose, go to Settings> Personalization> Lock screen and enable the Show background image of Windows lock screen on the login screen.

If you leave disabled, the login screen will display a solid color. To choose this color, go to Personalization> Colors and choose a highlight color.

Hide your email address

For the sake of privacy, Windows 10 allows you to hide your email address from the login screen. You can turn it off by going to  Settings> Accounts> Incoming options> Privacy> Show account details (for example, email address) on the login screen.

Turn off notifications

Block screen notifications may be convenient, but can also be read by anyone who looks at the screen. To turn them off, go to Settings> System> Notifications and actions> Show notifications on the lock screen and turn it off.
