How to backup whatsapp photos to google photos to save space on Android

When using WhatsApp on your Android phone, you should receive many pictures that are sent by your friends. Although this is an essential function of the application, the big problem is that with time, all these images take up a considerable space of storage of your device.

Fortunately, you can get around this problem by using some cloud service like Google Photos, which comes pre-installed on mobile phones with the Google system. Here’s how to let WhatsApp-received images automatically synced to Google Photos.

Checking the space occupied by WhatsApp images

Before proceeding to set up Google Photos, it may be a good idea to check your WhatsApp image space, as well as free up space and save upload time by discarding unwanted files. Check out how this is done:

  1. Open WhatsApp normally and click the icon represented by “three points”;
  2. Touch “Settings” and go to “Data and storage”;
  3. On the new screen, start browsing through the conversations to see how much they are taking up space with pictures.

When you open each conversation or contact, you’ll have the “Clear Space” option to remove the files you do not want to enter into your Google Photos.

Setting up Google Photos

Again, before proceeding, it is worthwhile to do another setup, which is done in Google Photos itself so that it has storage space in the unlimited cloud. Look:

  1. Open Google Photos and touch the icon represented by “three lines”;
  2. Click on “Settings” and go to “Backup and synchronization”;
  3. On the new screen, touch “Upload size” and select the “High quality (unlimited storage grade)” option.

Now that these two settings are already in place, you need to have Google Photos monitor the WhatsApp received images folder so they are saved to their cloud. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open Google Photos normally and touch the icon represented by “three lines”;
  2. Go to “Device folders”, select the “WhatsApp Images” folder in the list and check the “Backup and synchronization” option.

Freeing space on mobile

After doing this process above, the images you had in the WhatsApp folder should already be in Google Photos, but it takes another step before the original files are removed from the device and freeing up space. Here’s how to proceed:

  1. Open Google Photos normally, and then touch the “three-line” icon again;
  2. Go into “Settings,” click “Free up space on a device,” then “Release.” The process takes according to the number of files you have on the device, so remember to be connected to Wi-Fi to avoid problems with your data plan.
