9 WhatsApp tips and tricks everyone should know

If you love spending hours in WhatsApp, use it to chat with friends, make phone calls and see what your contacts are doing through status, get to know a few tricks and tips that can help a lot.

WhatsApp is one of the best social networking applications today. Much of this is due to the great features it offers, such as free video calls, and the ability to delete messages. However, even if you use WhatsApp regularly, you may be unaware of some of your best features.

In this article, we’ll look at some amazing WhatsApp features. Although for some users, these features are old acquaintances, for others it can be a sensational discovery.

1. Adjust your WhatsApp privacy settings

You do not always want everyone to know when you’re online, or have the chance to know if you’ve read the last message you sent. Sometimes you want a little time to think before you respond.

Another thing you may wish for is that only a few people see your profile photo. In fact, it’s a good idea to leave the profile photo visible only to your contacts, otherwise, anyone who adds you as a contact will be able to see it.

Go to  Settings> Account> Privacy and there you can adjust all your WhatsApp privacy settings. By default, everyone – not just your contacts – can see when you’ve been online, status message and profile photo, but this is not recommended for security reasons.

It’s a bit strange that an application that has decided to invest in both encryptions, has also opted for overly public privacy settings. It’s up to you to make WhatsApp more secure and private.

2. Back up your WhatsApp messages

If you never want to miss your WhatsApp conversations again, you need to back up your chat history. To do this, go to Settings> Chats> Chat Backup> Backup.

If you’re on iOS, the backup goes straight to your iCloud account. On an Android device, it accesses your Google Drive account. Of course, you need to be logged in to the cloud storage account before you back up.

It’s best to put your backups on autopilot and forget about them. This is where Auto Backup is useful. It allows you to back up your chats daily, weekly, or monthly. (You can specify whether to include videos in the backup.)

Now, if you accidentally delete WhatsApp messages, you still have some hope of getting them back.

3. Export WhatsApp Chats

If you want to share specific conversations by email or some other service, use the Export Chat option. You’ll find this by going in the three dots that are in the top left corner (inside the conversation being exported) and clicking More> Export Chat.

The exported conversation appears as a ZIP file, which you can share with others. During export, you can specify whether the file should include media.

4. Change the wallpaper of WhatsApp

Chatting in WhatsApp does not have to be a bland experience since it is very easy to change the scenery. Just go to Settings> Chats> Wallpaper and put a new background, from the library of embedded wallpapers. You can also choose a solid color or one of your own photos as wallpaper.

Want the original WhatsApp wallpaper back? All you have to do is follow the same path above and, on the last screen, click on No wallpaper.

5. Know when WhatsApp messages have been read

If you’re anxious to know if your friend has read your last message, just watch the conversation and look for the blue markings to see if your last message was read (if read receipts are enabled).

Need more information? Press and hold the message, and tap Information to see exactly when the message was delivered and when it was read.

Remember that you will see some shades of gray if your friend has not read the message, and a single gray visa if it has not yet been delivered.

6. Check your usage of WhatsApp data

No one likes to spend too much internet data, so it’s worth checking how many WhatsApp data is using. To do this, go to  Settings> Data & Storage usage> Network Usage, and you can get all the details of all your data consumption.

If you want to keep data usage low, adjust the automatic download and media call settings in  Settings> Data and storage usage> Low data usage.

You can restrict automated media downloads to Wi-Fi connections, or turn them off completely to save on mobile data. Choosing a lower voice call quality also helps keep data usage inactive.

7. Use WhatsApp Web

You can use WhatsApp on your PC. To do this, go to web.whatsapp.com on your computer. Then open WhatsApp on your smartphone and go to  Settings> WhatsApp Web.Now point your smartphone at your computer screen, and scan the QR code displayed there. Your conversations should appear instantly.

You can also use this method to access WhatsApp on a tablet.

8. Change your WhatsApp number

Changing your mobile number does not mean the end of your WhatsApp account. You can transfer it to the new number. Go to  Settings> Account> Change number and start the process. You will need to enter the old and new numbers to migrate the data correctly.

9. Delete your WhatsApp account

If for some reason you want to totally delete your WhatsApp account, go to  Settings> Account> Delete my account.

You can always start a new account later if you change your mind, but your current account’s chat history will be lost permanently. Cloud backups of your messages also disappear. In addition, you’ll disappear from your friends’ groups and contact lists.

Keep in mind that all the conversations you’re part of are still visible to your contacts, as those conversations are also part of their chat history.
